[MachineShop] Your thoughts

Hi Denis, I feel your pain.

Vacuum cleaners are special thinks because they are big and obvious and lots of people feel entitled to use them without training... In the arcade at Haines Hunter and I locked the vacuum cleaner specifically with a combo lock, because a) we wanted it to be there when we felt like cleaning the arcade and b) we only wanted arcade stuff in our vacuum cleaner, not wood shop dust and everything else Quelab has to throw at a vacuum cleaner.

We also have a recurring problem with the machine shop vacuum cleaner. Last time (that I am aware of) the hose went missing and I stole the replacement from the (apparently?) scrap hoses bin in the woodshop.

So rather than come up with a comprehensive solution to anything potentially going missing, maybe just lock the vacuum cleaner. Worked for the arcade.

Other thoughts:
Have you asked Darrel and Bill whether they or someone who was working for Darrel took it. Darrel often has non-members working or volunteering for him and they don't know our rules.

The broken window theory: If the shop looks clean and organized, it will be more obvious when something goes missing, hence cameras and whatnot will be more effective. Conversely, if it looks like a junk yard, people will treat it like a junk yard.

A simple sign that says "Machine shop certified members only" or "No entry without machine shop area certification" might deter a few casual shoppers. I think the current signage is "this door to remain closed" or something of that nature, which maybe doesn't get clearly enough to the point.

Mitchell
