[QUELAB CNC] CNC Cutters and Software: Free versus Not

Geoff,

Glad that you have at least one end mill in the collet.

I purchased about 4-8 cutters with 1/4 in dia shank (thought 1/4 in).

Have no idea where the cutters migrated to. Perhaps Eric has an idea?

For information: when I bought 1/4 shank cutters from Amazon they were
advertised and shipped from China. So guess what? They are sort of close but
in mm diameter. I ordered these back in Mid-March and brought them to the
lab in early April when ric, Morgan and I discovered the problem.

The result is that there is run-out or wobble of the cutting edges. But why
not just leave the end mill in the collet to get started?

Also, I did go online to try to find a collet for the Bosch Palm Router that
could adapt down to 1/8 in dia shanks. I was unsuccessful. This is a pity
because the small Dermal tools use 1/8 in and are plentiful at Quelab.
Perhaps another search would be more successful?

I do agree that it is very desirable to complete an enclosure. And
especially if it has a flat top to store stuff (maybe a drawer for paper
info and- or cutters or what?

But To my thinking the last major missing piece is the software check out.
The software geeks back in March were talking just a bit over my head. The
basis of the discussion seemed to be on Freeware versus purchased software
(tho at a reasonable cost I think).

As I recall it was Adrick who advocated for the purchased software? I expect
that he can offer an ear full.

Sorry, I have a regular commitment Tuesdays and cannot attend. I can take a
call or a text.

Geoff, Hi -
I came down to Quelab Sunday evening wondering if we might get better
coordinated.

I spoke to Eric and others where we learned second hand that you have the
CNC and the Bosche palm router. And I hope the cutters and the collets.

Congratulations!

Just want to understand that all the physical hardware that I bought for the
project is available.

Good idea for an enclosure and especially vacuum cleaner to collect metal
particles and other shavings.

What I'm hoping to learn is that interested software geeks get a chance to
try out/sort through the ones that members seem passionate about proving in.
There are three members that I seem to recall: Adrick, Morgan, and one other
I haven't got his name right yet (Maybe you)... sorry.

Am hoping to learn of progress via this channel.
Please let me know if there are other hardware concern that I can contribute
to.

Best Regards,

John Anthes
Dr. Opto

Yeah, I took it home to get the opportunity to fix it, clean it up, and
build an enclosure for it so people stop storing stuff on top of it, and
also keeps the sawdust out of it.?

Geoff,

Glad to find out it's somewhere definite, and not 'missing' (perhaps
'misplaced' might be a better term). I missed any discussion of you taking
it home! How is enclosure construction going? Have you set a done-by
date to have it completed & back to Quelab (similar to what was done with
Morgan, with the time limit he was asked to follow to get the X-Carve
upgrade kit installed)? How soon until we can start cutting stuff? Do you
think we will be able to have it in the Quelab tent at MMF?

@Dr Opto - Geoff doesn't say anything about a vacuum or dust collection. He
says "to keep sawdust out of it", which I took to mean that other tools in
the shop generate sawdust which was covering the tools on the CNC Table.
However, that is a good idea, to install dust collection of some type, since
it will be quite the sawdust generator once we starting cutting things on
it!

Sundays are just about the worst days for catching up with me, so I
apologise that I was not at the lab to coordinate with you on the Shapeoko.
Were the bits you bought left with the device, or do you still have them?

I found that the tool had been stowed with an endmill wedged in the collet,
so that might be why people were having issues with it previously. I'll tap
out the wedged endmill and see if the collet is damaged or not.

The enclosure I have in mind could easily be set up with a vaccuum port to
enhance it's own dust-collection capabilities, I was thinking something much
like the doors on Printernator where you can see in, but close the door to
keep the noise and dust in the machine.

I expect to return the Shapeoko to the space the end of August at the
latest; the intent was to rehab it and have it making giveaway items at
MakerFaire with it's enclosure.
